Palm Springs - Monday

Back to Sunday

Ready for the hike!

Palms along the side of the stream

Leapin' Lizards!

Dense palms overhead

Awake at 6am again, we showered and packed, then checked out. We drove next door and ate at Elmers. Then a short drive to the North we entered an Indian reservation and drove to the start of the Andreas Canyon trail. It was a mile long trail that Rick had picked out the night before. The trail followed a small stream coming down out of the mountains, with gigantic palm trees crowded along the banks. Factmo told us that it was the densest palm grove canyon anywhere in the United States.

We walked leisurely along the trail, taking lots of pictures. On the return part of the loop we got a great view of the valley below. The hike only took us about an hour and a half, so we decided to drive a bit further into the reservation and try the Palm Canyon trail. It had groves of palms along the way, with a bit more elevation change than on our previous hike.

About 45 minutes of hiking seemed to be enough as the temperature was starting to climb into the nineties. We hopped back in the car and drove around a bit, trying to find the 'secret' road up to Bob Hope's house. Unfortunately it was behind a gated entrance, so we had to view it from a distance. After another half hour of driving around and looking at the neighborhoods, we drove back into town for lunch.

So much to photograph!

Lizards everywhere!

We parked and walked a bit, only to find ourselves eating within half a block of all the other places we had eaten at all weekend! Lunch was pretty leisurely (read: slow service), but that was fine. We had plenty of time before our flight. A quick car trip brought us to the airport where Pete and Randy downloaded photos and we all relaxed before our flight. The return flight was once again packed to the gills, and Randy had the pleasure of sitting next to a one year old with a cough. Yay! Fortunately it was only an hour long.

It had been a great weekend, lots of outdoor adventure, lots of laughing and giggling. We really enjoyed spending the weekend with Pete and Kevin, we'll have to do another trip with them sometime soon.

Photo details: We used a pair of Minolta Dimage A2 cameras, each with a 2GB memory card. We just got these cameras the week before, and they are amazing! We both got lots of great photos with them.
